A costume is an invitation to play along. Role-play and cosplay rooms run on a premise: a character the host is wearing for the night, a setting they have sketched in the room topic, a scenario that builds as the chat joins in. Cosplay here means costumes of grown-up characters from films, games and comics, worn with care and often made by hand.

Reading the topic before you type is the whole trick. It usually tells you who the host is playing, what the scene is and how far they want the crowd involved, and jumping in out of character tends to break the spell for everyone. Stay inside the story, suggest rather than steer, and accept that the host writes the script; if they change the scenario mid-show, follow them. Requests that ignore the premise usually get a polite in-character brush-off that belongs to the game as well.

Craft is a big part of the appeal. Viewers who know the source material tend to notice the details, a prop built from scratch, a wig styled just right, a voice that matches the character, and saying so can make a host's night. Themes come and go with new releases, so last week's starship bridge may be a fantasy tavern tonight.
